Grundy Center girls drop close conference games

ELDORA – Grundy Center lost a pair of close NICL West games this past week, dropping a road game to South Hardin Friday, 56-54, after a 40-35 loss on their home court to Hudson on Tuesday.
The Spartans, who move to 9-7 overall and 6-5 in the NICL West, have just one game on the schedule this week against East Marshall at Le Grand on Friday, Jan. 30.

Top-ranked Rebels score lopsided wins

    REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team proved it was worthy of its first-ever No. 1 ranking last week, scoring a trio of one-sided victories.
    The Rebels (14-0 overall, 11-0 in the NICL West) scored conference victories over BCLUW and AGWSR Tuesday and Friday before topping Manson Northwest Webster Saturday at the All-Iowa Attack Shootout in Ames.
    G-R also downed North Butler Monday and played at Jesup Tursday. It is at West Marshall Friday and hosts North Tama Saturday in its busiest week of the season.

 

Wolverine girls improve to 11-0 in NICL East

DIKE – The Dike-New Hartford girls remain at the top of the NICL East with two more conference wins this past week. The Wolverines earned a 50-29 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, after a commanding 63-17 win at Jesup Tuesday.
This week the Wolverines (13-2 overall, 11-0 NICL East) were scheduled to play BCLUW at Conrad on Tuesday, Jan. 27, host Charles City on Thursday, Jan. 29, and play Aplington-Parkersburg at Parkersburg on Friday, Jan. 30.

Sicard to play softball at DMACC

ACKLEY — Ashley Sicard of Ackley has one summer left of high school softball, but Thursday she secured more diamond time by signing a national letter of intent to play for Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).
Sicard has signed with a program that is long on achievements in a short time. In just three years in the sport, the Bears have made two appearances in the NJCAA College World Series. DMACC placed third last season and had a seventh placing in 2012.

Annabelle Dirks

Annabelle Voigt Dirks passed away on January 4, 2015, at the age of 94 at Monte Vista Grove Homes in Pasadena, California, where she had lived since 2001. A funeral service will be held at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland, her husband’s boyhood church, on Sunday, February 15, at 2 pm. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the church’s adjoining cemetery near the graves of many Dirks family members. A memorial service will be held at Monte Vista Grove Homes (2889 San Pasqual St.) in Pasadena, California on Saturday, February 21, at 2 pm, in Marwick Place.

Betty Gene Paul Dieken, 102, passed away January 22, 2015, at the Kavanaugh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. Funeral services were held on January 27 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A private burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Harm L. Aalfs

Harm L. Aalfs, 94, of Grundy Center, formerly of Holland, passed away January 21, 2015, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. Henrietta Pruis, 95, of Grundy Center died January 21, 2015, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center.
