Grundy County grad rates well above state average

    Grundy County high school graduation rates continued to rank well above the statewide average in 2013 as well as above the North Iowa Cedar League average.
    The rates were released by the Iowa Department of Education recently.

Borcherding named one of Iowa’s 100 Great Nurses

    GRUNDY CENTER -- Each year 100 Great Iowa Nurses are honored at a ceremony, created for the state of Iowa, by nurse and community leaders.   This award recognizes nurses for making a meaningful and lasting contribution to humanity and our profession. This Great Nurse is also viewed as a mentor to others and exemplifies all of the principles on which the 100 Great Iowa Nurses celebration was founded.

Supervisors OK farm-to-market resurfacing bid

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors Monday approved a bid for the county’s 2014 farm-to-market road surfacing project.
    The project for granular surfacing will cover 32 1/2 miles on locations throughout the county. Three bids came in, with the low of $14.60 per metric ton (for 8,125 metric tons) coming in from PCI of Reinbeck. The bid is $2.05 per ton higher than a year ago and $2.35 above Engineer Gary Mauer’s estimated cost. Other bids came in from Paul Niemann Construction of Sumner, Manatts Group, LLC of Charles City and Monson and Sons of Britt.

Pat Grassley to seek reelection

NEW HARTFORD – Today Rep. Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford) announced he will seek a fifth term to the Iowa House.  Grassley represents District 50 which is made up of Grundy County, Southern Butler and Northern Hardin Counties.
 Grassley graduated from Dike-New Hartford High School and Hawkeye Community College.  Currently, he farms with his father and grandfather.  He has also been active in his local community through his work with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and the Oak Hill Cemetery Foundation Board.

Cedar Valley Hospice Quilt-A-Thon to be held April 12

GRUNDY CENTER – The 15th Annual Cedar Valley Hospice Quiltathon will be held Saturday, April 12 at the Dike Legion Hall. Doors will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for this event with drawings for door prizes and a potluck lunch. All quilts made will be given to Cedar Valley Hospice patients. All volunteers are welcome, no experience required!

Lois Mae Erpelding

Lois Mae Erpelding, 93, of Waterloo, formerly of Dike, passed away on March 22, 2014, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, March 28 from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Friendship Village Cove in Waterloo, 3720 Village Place, Waterloo, IA 50702. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 9 at 1 P.M. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. The Engelkes-Abels Dike Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Floyd E. Van Tiger

Floyd E. Van Tiger, 92 of Hampton, formerly of Eldora, died March 16, 2014 at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. There will be no public services. Floyd was laid to rest in the Eldora City Cemetery. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the arrangements.
