Pierce named NICL West Player of the Year

    Two weeks after leading his team to its first outright North Iowa Cedar League West Division title in several years, Gladbrook-Reinbeck junior Zach Pierce has another honor for his scrapbook — that of league Player of the Year.
    Pierce was named to the spot as league coaches announced their all-conference picks Monday. He is one of four Gladbrook-Reinbeck players on the team, joining Camden Kickbush (first team), Joe Smoldt (second team) and Colton Dinsdale (honorable mention).

School District to create new contract with Y

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Community School District’s relationship with the YMCA appears set to move forward.
    Last Wednesday, the School Board approved a motion for the District to work with the local YMCA Board to replace a contract that will be expiring June 30.
    More than 30 members of the public attended the meeting to express their support for the Y, which is in its fourth year at the Grundy Center secondary school. Four individuals spoke to the Board, all in favor of either keeping the YMCA as is or even expanding its hours.

Barkley is new pastor at First Baptist Church

    GRUNDY CENTER — A new face has found the pulpit at First Baptist Church in Grundy Center. Nathan Barkley formally took over the pulpit earlier this month and is working to install a family-based ministry.
    “I want a church that’s not divided, that’s not sectarian, that doesn’t have cliques and groups,” he said. “I want a family. I want a place that’s warm, where people care about each other. That we come together as a family when we come together each week.”

School Board seeks public input into superintendent selection

    The Grundy Center Community School District is seeking public input into its selection of a superintendent.
    School Board president Bob Johanns has invited the public to an informational meeting next Thursday (March 6) at 6 p.m. in the High School Auditorium, where consultants hired by the Board will present an overview of the search process and criteria for the board’s consideration.

Fair Board exploring non-profit status

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Fair Board is exploring its options regarding becoming a non-profit organization. Monday, members of the Fair Board met with the County Board of Supervisors to share information and get input.

Dorothy M. "Dort” (Simons) Heckt

Dorothy Heckt, age 89, of Golden Valley, passed away Feb. 23, 2014.  Funeral services  will be Saturda, March 1 at 2 p.m. at Wooddale Church, 6630 Shady Oak Road, Eden Prairie, MN with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Camp Friendship, Twin Cities ARC or Wooddale Church. Full obit will appear in next week’s addition.
