Clark, Rebels run roughshod on Spartans

GLADBROOK - Chase Clark needed only one half to reach 200 yards for the fifth straight game as Gladbrook-Reinbeck clinched a playoff berth with a 42-0 victory over Grundy Center in a battle of Class A, District 4 unbeatens.
The Rebels (5-2 overall, 4-0 in District 4) held Grundy Center’s offense, which came into the game averaging 479 yards per district contest, to 113 yards. Their offense rolled up 417 yards despite a running clock throughout the second half.

Spartans take runner-up spot in Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA – The Grundy Center Spartan volleyball team was one match shy of a perfect week last week as they played their way to the runner-up spot at the Oskaloosa Invitational on Saturday. The Spartans fell in the final to North Polk 25-20, 21-25, 14-16, narrowly missing the win after failing to convert on a match point opportunity in the final set.

Wolverines top Hudson

HUDSON – Dike-New Hartford held on to sole possession of the lead in Class 1A District 3 and clinched a playoff berth with a 35-7 win at Hudson last Friday night. The Wolverine offense wasted no time in building an early lead while the defense held the Pirates scoreless for three quarters.
“I thought we really came out ready to play,” Dike-New Hartford head coach Don Betts said. “Our guys got after them right away and we were able to set the tone early.”

Wolverines clinch NICL East title, win Cedar Rapids tourney

DIKE — Dike-New Hartford wrapped up its third consecutive North Iowa Cedar League East Division volleyball championship last week while also taking the championship in the largely-Class 4A and 5A Cedar Rapids West Side Invitational.
The Wolverines (33-1 overall, 6-0 in the NICL East) extended their division winning streak to 23 matches with a straight sets victory over Denver last Tuesday. D-NH’s last league loss came to Wapsie Valley in 2010.

Cougars clinch playoff berth with district win over Belmond-Klemme

ACKLEY – AGWSR moved to 8-0 on the season and clinched their first playoff berth since 2005 with their 23-13 win over Belmond-Klemme Friday night. They currently sit atop the Class A District 2 standings at 5-0 in district play.
“The team played well,” AGWSR head coach Skip Eckhardt said. “Playing good defense was a key to the win. Staying healthy and eliminating mistakes will be important going into next week.”

GC students get revved up to build new Ultimate Mileage Vehicle

GRUNDY CENTER — For the fourth time, Grundy Center High School students and industrial technology teacher Kris Seitz will again construct a prototype for the Ultimate Mileage Vehicle (UMV) competition, just one of many contests at the Iowa Industrial Technology Exposition at Southeast Polk High School in rural Des Moines held each spring.

Supervisors add D-NH to hazard mitigation plan

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved the addition of the Dike-New Hartford Community School District to the county's hazard mitigation plan during Monday's regular meeting.
Adding the School District to the plan will allow it to apply for federal funds that would be used to build a tornado safe room at its high school/elementary complex in Dike. Several other area school districts are also in the process of building similar facilities. There was no public comment during a public hearing about the matter.
 

Mike Stoner

Mike Stoner of Stanley passed away on September 27, 2013. A party celebrating and remembering Mike’s life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 1-5 p.m. at the Evansdale Amvets Post No. 31 in Evansdale. Family and friends are welcome.

Leonard C. Sommer

Leonard C. Sommer, 89, of Cedar Falls, died October 7, 2013, at the Western Home Communities Windhaven Assisted Living. Memorial services were October 12 at Linden United Methodist Church in Waterloo with inurnment in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Falls.  Military Honors were provided by the Evansdale AMVETS Posts 31 and 19.  There was no visitation. Donna J. Nederhoff

Donna J. Nederhoff, age 82, of Cedar Falls, died October 7, 2013 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral servies were October 11 at Nazareth Lutheran Church (Chapel) in Cedar Falls with Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Visitation was Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Burial was in the Holland Cemetery in Holland. A memorial fund has been established in Donna’s name.
