Spartans wrap up regular season with victory

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center football team created the perfect ending to their regular season, particularly for the 14 senior members of the team recognized before the start of Friday’s senior night game, when they rolled past North Tama 45-7 at Spartan Stadium.  
The Spartans were first to score on a 30-yard run by Jordan Clapp, but the Redhawks were soon to answer with a 3-yard run by Brandon Kaufman to even the score at 7-7. The Spartans take the lead again on a Bryce Moats 3-yard run to make it 14-7 before the end of the first period.

Wolverines clinch District 3 title behind Eiklenborg, defense

    DIKE – Gabe Eiklenborg returned a pair of first-quarter punts, leading Dike-New Hartford to a record-breaking 85-6 victory over West Fork Friday and its second straight Class 1A, District 3 championship.
    “We knew it was for a district championship tonight and I wanted our kids to come out and play like district champions,” Wolverine coach Don Betts said after the game. “We got a fast start and once we got rolling things went pretty well.”

Cougars set to play for District 2 championship

LAKE MILLS — AGWSR overcame a sluggish first half to set up a one-game showdown for the Class A, District 2 championship with a 31-6 victory at Lake Mills Friday.
The Cougars (9-0 overall, 6-0 in district play) host Prairie Valley in a winner-takes-all season finale Friday. Prairie Valley (5-3, 5-1) has won five straight games since dropping its season opener.

Mervin ‘Moe’ Hansen

Mervin “Moe” Hansen, 93, of Dike passed away October 18, 2013, at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service was held on October 21 at the Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church rural Cedar Falls. Burial followed at Fredsville Church Cemetery. A visitation was held October 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Dike. Memorials may be directed to the family. Board gives preliminary Good Conduct Policy approval

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center School Board gave preliminary approval to a new district Good Conduct Policy during its regular meeting last Wednesday at the District Administration Office.
    The new policy is similar to the old one with one fairly major exception regarding students who are in the presence of a situation that violates the policy but not actively involved in it.
    “Mere presence is the biggest thing that has changed,” Secondary Principal Steve VanderPol said.

German exchange program could expand to full year

    GRUNDY CENTER — Over the past two weeks, Grundy Center High School and Grundy County have hosted guests from the Krummhorn region of Germany. And there is a chance the program could expand.
    Krummhorn’s acting mayor, Frank Baumann, said last week that he would like see students from the region come to Grundy Center for longer at a time.

New Hartford dedicates Meditation Gardens

    NEW HARTFORD — More than five years after an F5 tornado devastated the cities of Parkersburg, New Hartford and surrounding areas, a new garden has been dedicated in their memory.
    On Oct. 2, the City of New Hartford dedicated the New Hartford Meditation Garden located south of the Town Square Gazebo Garden.
