Janet Bingham Bean

Janet Marie Bingham Bean, daughter of Leland and Wilma Bingham passed away on Oct. 12, 2013, after a short illness. She graduated from the Grundy Center High School in 1952.
She resided in Howell, Mich., from 1960 to 2008, where she was a parishioner of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Howell. Janet taught art and English in the Howell school system for 20 years. Her hobbies included needlework, beading, painting and wildlife photography.

Betty Jean Baker Hansen

Betty J. Baker Hansen, 86, of Reinbeck, formerly of Cedar Falls, passed away October 25, 2013, at the Parkview Manor in Reinbeck while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A celebration of Betty’s life will be announced and held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family where they will make a donation to the charity of their choice. Sophia J. Frost

Sophia J. Frost, 70, of New Hartford died October 21, 2013, at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Per Sophia’s wishes she has been cremated. A gathering to Celebrate Sophia’s Life was held October 27 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family. Long road leads new pastor to Colfax

HOLLAND — Sometimes pastors get a call from the Lord that they at first do not understand. It is the kind of call that takes a pastor from his lifelong home in the South to a small, Midwest church located a few miles from anywhere. And sometimes that pastor could not be happier to be there.
    Just two short weeks ago, the Rev. Robby Grames began his new life as pastor at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church after serving in a similar role in Minneola, Fla for the past 6 1/2 years.

County to move forward with condemnation proceedings

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County will be moving forward with condemnation proceedings to acquire the property for construction of a new county annex building.
    County Attorney Kirby Schmidt briefed the Board on the next step in the proceedings to acquire the property at 801 Seventh Street in Grundy Center, which is owned by Zenor, Inc.

City Council approves project to install new street, stop-and-go lights

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center City Council gave the final go-ahead for new street and stop-and-go lights in and around Grundy Center.

Holloway is new face of local economic development

    GRUNDY CENTER — The face of Grundy County economic development has a new face.
    Angie Holloway took over the role that has been held by a variety of people in recent years last month and has been learning the ropes as program director with the Grundy County Development Alliance. It is a role, she said, that is slowing evolving.

Spartans secure fifth straight NICL crown

TAMA — The Grundy Center High School volleyball team rallied from the brink of a set one loss and went on to sweep South Tama 26-24, 25-10, 25-17 to clinch its fourth straight North Iowa Cedar League West Division title last Tuesday.
The Spartans (26-8 overall) finish undefeated in NICL West play for the fifth straight season, having not lost a set the past four years. South Tama (16-12 overall) finishes 6-1 in division play.
