Susie Kliebenstein

Susie "The Gingerbread Lady" Kliebenstein, 78, passed away at Grundy County Memorial Hospital on April 12. A memorial service was held April 16 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. 

Harlan H. Saathoff

Harlan Saathoff, 94, of Grundy Center passed away April 11 at the United Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were held April 16 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. 

Comet girls, Cougar boys get golf wins

BCLUW and AGWSR faced off on a chilly afternoon Monday, as the boys played in Conrad, and the girls played in Union.
 
On the girls’ end, the Comets took home a 230-240 victory. BCLUW sophomore Lauren Anderson earned medalist honors with a round of 50, and senior Mikaela Simpson was runner-up with a 58. Rounding out the BCLUW varsity lineup were Mackenzie Trinkle (58), Madi Trinkle (64), Olivia Callaway (65) and Darian Webb (69).
           

BCLUW board approves 2016-2017 budget

The BCLUW Board of Education approved its operating budget for the 2016-2017 school year and renewed the district’s joint administration agreement with GMG during a meeting at the high school media center on Monday morning.
 

Keeping the wheels in motion

Timothy Christian eighth grader Jacob Olthoff has always had a natural curiosity for science: he likes to take things apart, rebuild them and figure out how they work. Recently, his inquisitiveness led him to create a science fair project, “How the Placement of the Water Source Affects the Speed and Torque of a Water Wheel,” that placed in the top 10 percent of all entries at the state competition.
 

Ivester Wind Farm gets green light

Seats were hard to come by at the Grundy County Courthouse on Monday morning as more than 50 people filed in to a courtroom to express their opinions on the Ivester Wind Farm during a public hearing on the matter. After almost an hour and a half of arguments both for and against the project, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to approve a rezoning application from EDF Renewable Energy that will allow 45 wind turbines to be built across over 4,000 acres of farmland in west central Grundy County.

Hospital volunteers reach 1,000 hours of service

GRUNDY CENTER – Four local volunteers have individually logged 1,000 hours of service at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital – a combined total of over five months of continuous work.
While they’re not the first of the hospital’s 60-plus volunteers to reach 1,000 hours, they are some of the first to reach the milestone at the same time.
Grundy County locals Carol Simms, Joyce Middleton, Mary Lynch and Pat Hauser have all been volunteering at GCHS for the past six years, working at the East J Café and at the welcome desk.

Grundy Center native authors book recounting area’s finest athletes

GRUNDY CENTER – A native of Grundy Center, David Pike has always been inspired by sports. During high school he earned 15 letters in various sports and was Harry Dole’s first catcher on the 1968 and 1969 Spartan baseball team. After graduation he went on to wrestle at UNI, where he lettered all four years and won a conference championship. Then, in 2004, he and a few others started the Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame. Now, Pike is working on penning a book to commemorate the athletes in the Hall of Fame.

Vernon Heerkes

Vernon Heerkes, 75, of Dike, passed away April 9 at his home in Dike. A funeral service was held April 13 at the Dike United Methodist Church. Visitation was held April 12 at the church.
