Wilda Jane “Billie” Janssen

Wilda Jane “Billie” Janssen, 65, of Wellsburg passed away on August 28, 2015, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Visitation was held at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg on August 30. A funeral service was held August 31 at the First Christian Reformed Church in rural Wellsburg. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Global Compassion Network, care of the family.

Hook, Koop, Weber compete for UNI court time

Grundy County fans may have more reason than ever to support the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team this season. Not only does head coach Bobbi Petersen hail from the area, but this year three players from local high schools, redshirt sophomore Heather Hook of Grundy Center and new freshmen Rachel Koop and Bri Weber of Dike-New Hartford, can be found among the ranks of the Panther roster.

School Board approves high school P.E. changes

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center High School students will no longer have to exceed state physical education requirements in order to graduate from high school.
    Last Wednesday the Grundy Center School Board approved a recommendation to reduce graduation requirements for P.E. from 2 credits to 1, which is the state requirement.
    The unanimous decision came following a lengthy board discussion that touched on the need for the change as well as future hopes for the district.

Split vote sinks zoning ordinance change

    GRUNDY CENTER — A proposed zoning ordinance that would have added conditional uses will not become law in Grundy County.
    County Zoning Administrator Carie Sager approached the Supervisors several weeks ago with a proposal to return conditional uses back into to the ordinance.

Mom Camp in session ...

DIKE — Some were there to learn a little about the game. Some were there to see what their sons were doing every day as they spent hours at football practice. Some were there simply to support their sons.
More than 30 Dike-New Hart-ford moms and supporters ... no dads allowed ... were part of the Dike-New Hartford football team’s annual Mom Camp that’s been a tra-dition at the school for the past three years.
Wendy Camarata, mom of Nick Durnin, said this is her third D-NH Mom Camp and that she learns something new every year.

O’Malley admits nomination fight could be difficult battle

    GRUNDY CENTER — Presidential Candidate Martin O’Malley (D, Maryland) admitted that his fight for the 2016 Democratic Presidential nomination could be a difficult fight. That said, however, during a stop in Grundy Center Friday, the former Maryland governor and mayor of Baltimore said he is up for the fight.
    “I’ve been in battles like this before,” he said. “When I first ran for state senate and then when I ran for mayor of Baltimore, the day I announced I was the first choice of a whopping 7 percent of my neighbors.
