Gwendolyn Eloise Cox, 93, of Grundy Center passed away December 21, 2013, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care, while under the care of Iowa Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 27 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck. Burial will be held privately at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. Missing Grundy County man recovered from Poweshiek County lake

Body recovered from Lake Ponderosa
MONTEZUMA -- The search for a man who fell through the ice on Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma ended successfully with his recovery Tuesday evening.
According to Chris Widmer, chief, Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department, divers located David Allen Hartke, 57, Grundy Center, at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013. Hartke reportedly fell through a weak spot in the ice on Lake Ponderosa while ice fishing Saturday evening, Dec. 14. The Ranger and ice hut he was using also fell into the lake.

Long-time Public Health manager, Haren, to retire

GRUNDY CENTER — For more than 28 years a familiar name has been the face of Grundy County Public Health. Early next year, Nancy Haren will say her final goodbyes to Public Health, leaving behind her years of memories.
    “I’m feeling really good about leaving the organization in Wendy (Monaghahn) and the rest of the staff’s hands,” Haren said. “I think they’ll do very well.

Spartans fall to South Tama, BCLUW

GRUNDY CENTER – The Spartans girls’ basketball team dropped two close NICL-West games this past week, falling to South Tama on their home court Friday 46-41, and dropping a road game to BCLUW on Tuesday, 43-41. They also lost a non-conference game to Class 2A fifth-ranked Hudson, 71-36 on Thursday.   
The Spartans (2-3 overall, 1-2 NICL-West) have another busy three game week before the holiday break, hosting Meskwaki on Monday, Dec. 16, before going on the road to face South Hardin on Tuesday, Dec. 17, and East Marshall on Friday, Dec. 20.
