Coldest temperatures since ‘96 cause limited problems

    GRUNDY CENTER — Monday’s extreme cold snap was the most significant to hit the area in more than 15 years, though problems caused by the temperatures were somewhat limited according to local officials.

Funding cuts, infrastructure issues concern new mayor

    GRUNDY CENTER — Upcoming state budget cuts and the upcoming street light project are the largest areas of concern for new Grundy Center mayor Brian Buhrow as he enters his first term in office.
    Buhrow, who was sworn into office last Monday, said tax cuts passed by the Iowa legislature a year ago could hit cities hard.
    “It’s going to create problems for us making sure that our budget’s in line,” he said.

Riekena elected chair of Board of Supervisors

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Supervisors approved annual committee appointments and elected a new chair and vice-chair during last Thursday’s organizational meeting.
    Harlyn Riekena was elected chairman of the board, replacing the outgoing Jim Ross, while Mark Schildroth was elected vice-chair.

Local author surprised by sudden success

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center author Sandy Noble never knew the treasure that she had written. She might never have if not for the urging of others. Yet her first(and, to date, only) published book “The Fat Woman Mystery” has become a favorite far beyond the scope of people whom she expected would read it.
    “I didn’t expect to sell any (books),” she said. “I was shocked.”

Grundy Center Middle School students get taste of robotics

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center Middle School students are getting excited about robotics.
    Early last month, 32 Middle School Students traveled to Marshalltown Community College the regional First Lego League Tournament.  First Lego League is an inter-national robotics and problem solving competition that involves more than  20,000 teams in 70 different countries.  
    Grundy County was very well represented, sending four teams sponsored by the school district and one team supported by Grundy County 4-H.

    There was no lack of intriguing news in Grundy County in 2013. From contested elections to a controversial power corridor that outraged many local land owners to a pair of unexpected high-profile resignations, the year was interesting indeed.

Wolverine girls win battle of top 10 rivals

    DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford girls’ basketball team took sole possession of first place in the North Iowa Cedar League East Division Tuesday with a 52-47 victory over then-fifith ranked Hudson.
    The Wolverines, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, were outscored 21-8 in the third quarter to fall behind 45-38 before outscoring the Pirates 14-2 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
    Coach Bruce Dall said the victory is the second of a pair of big wins for his team over the past couple of weeks, also noting how big the team’s victory over Union the week before was.

Spartan girls edge A-P

GRUNDY CENTER – The Spartans girls’ basketball team slipped by with a 31-27 win over Aplington-Parkersburg Friday night.The Spartans (4-4 overall, 1-3 NICL-West) were scheduled to host Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 10.

AGWSR boys split non-conference games

    CEDAR FALLS – The AGWSR boys’ basketball team returned to the court for two non-conference games this past week, prevailing over Valley Lutheran of Cedar Falls 68-24, after losing a close contest with neighboring Aplington-Parkersburg, 65-56 on Thursday.
    AGWSR (5-3 overall, 2-2 NICL-West) is scheduled to play BCLUW at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and South Hardin at Eldora on Friday, Jan. 10.

Grundy boys fall to Falcons

GRUNDY CENTER – The NICL-East prevailed over the NICL-West Friday night when Aplington-Parkersburg handed Grundy Center a 62-39 loss on the Spartans’ home court.
The Spartans (3-5 overall, 3-1 NICL-West) were scheduled to play Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 10, both in Grundy Center.

Aplington-Parkersburg brought momentum from a win Thursday night with them as they took the court in Grundy Center Friday, and came away with a big 62-39 win over the Spartans.
