Engelkes, zoning administrator discuss home industry rules

    GRUNDY CENTER — The question of rules for home businesses came before the Grundy County Supervisors Monday as Melanie Engelkes, owner of The Shabby Shack in Grundy Center, approached about possibly moving her business to the Yankee Farm, just outside the Grundy Center city limits.
    Engelkes said she knows she needs a permit to put her business there, and came with questions about rules to run it as a home industry. County Zoning Administrator Carie Sager explained that the home industry permit is regulated by zoning rules.

Grundy Center Board discusses ways to improve reading scores

    GRUNDY CENTER — For the first time since No Child Left Behind legislation took effect in 2001, the Grundy Center Community School District finds itself in danger of falling onto the School in Need of Improvement (SINA) list.
    To prevent that from happening, Middle School language arts teachers have been working together to find ways to improve scores. They presented their findings at last Wednesday’s regular School Board meeting.

Land owners speak out against proposed Clean Line

GRUNDY CENTER — Local land owners expressed concern and trepidation while simply wondering why a proposed wind energy corridor needs to cross their land during a public forum about the proposed Rock Island Clean Line last Wednesday at the Grundy Center Community Center.
    Clean Line Energy Partners hosted the forum as part of the requirement to obtain a franchise for the line from the Iowa Utilities Board.

Long Term Care resident shares special project

GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care resident Mildred Knaack likes to keep busy and enjoys knitting. She has been making dishcloths for family and friends for many years, and now she’s made almost 100 of them for the Long Term Care staff.
Mildred has her own special pattern, but she also has adopted another pattern from a good friend. She makes some of each pattern, saying, “I think it’s a nice way to remember my friend by using her pattern, too.”

Miss Iowa visits Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER — The reigning Miss Iowa, Nicole Kelly, paid a visit to Grundy Center Schools on Friday, Nov. 22. Kelly spoke to kindergartners through eighth-graders about overcoming obstacles, setting dreams and achieving them.
Kelly is a Keokuk native who recently graduated from the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film at the University of Nebraska. She is spending the current school year visiting schools and all types of businesses and organizations, talking about her experiences as Miss Iowa.

Michael D. Burdick

Michael D. Burdick, 53, of Reinbeck died November 25, 2013, at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck. Visitation will be on Friday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Burial will follow funeral services at the Reinbeck Cemetery. Darlene S. Beenken

Darlene S. Beenken, 81, of Morrison passed away November 21, 2013, at her home in Morrison while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Visitation was November 24 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. The funeral service was held on November 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck with Pastor Mike Campbell officiating. Weber earns third straight 2A Player of the Year recognition

Dike-New Hartford junior Briana Weber has long been recognized as one of the top volleyball players in Iowa. Today she joins a select class reserved only for the elite.
    Weber was recognized Wednesday as the Class 2A Volleyball Player of the Year for the third straight season, becoming one of the few in state history to be recognized three times.
    The outside hitter led the Class 2A state champions with 4.5 kills per set while hitting with a .420 efficiency. She also served 96 percent with 46 aces and led the Wolverines with 2.54 digs per set.

Fourteen local gridders earn INA All-State honors

Local high school football teams had one of their best seasons on record, combining for 35 wins, three district championships and four playoff victories. Today no fewer than 14 members of those teams are honored as members of the Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Football Teams.
    The teams are selected by sports writers based on nominations from fellow writers and coaches as well as statistical data.
