New GCHS quintet makes mark on statewide stage

    GRUNDY CENTER — Walk down the hall at Grundy Center High School. Walk through the cafeteria and past the auditorium … and then listen closely. The sound you just might hear could be that of the high school’s newest vocal group — a group that has already made its mark on a statewide stage.

More than 120 attend meeting to oppose Clean Line

PARKERSBURG — Northwest Iowa group Preservation of Rural Iowa Alliance held a community meeting in efforts to stop the Rock Island Clean Line proposal last Monday (Nov. 25).
More than 120 area citizens gathered just three days after RICL’s informational meeting at the Grundy Center Community Center.
Residents from Ackley, Aplington, Alexander, Parkersburg, Grundy Center, Hudson and plenty more petitioned against the private company installing a 375-mile high voltage transmission line through northern Iowa.

GCPD introduces new officer cameras

    GRUNDY CENTER — Police officers nationwide have used in-car camera to record events and sounds of their everyday business. Technology recently introduced to the Grundy Center Police Department will allow them to take those recordings one step further.
    The Police Department recently purchased a set of officer-worn cameras to replace a pair of outdated cameras that have been mounted in squad cars for years.

Water rates to rise in Grundy Center

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center residents will not be getting a holiday bonus from the city in January. Instead they’ll be getting higher water rates.
    Monday the Grundy Center City Council passed an ordinance to raise water rates 5 percent, passing on an increase in rates the city pays to Central Iowa Water.
    Public Works Director Dan Bangasser said the rates for minimum water usage would increase from $11.61 to $12.22.
    Bangasser added that Grundy Center’s last water rate increase came in 2009 and that it also had an increase in 2008.

Suicide survivors learn tips to deal with grief

DIKE — One of the most difficult things for families to talk about is the loss of a loved one. If that loved one took their own life, the subject becomes even more difficult.
Robin Plocher, an after-care specialist with Engelkes-Abels Funeral Homes, recently hosted an event to help those families learn how to cope with their grief.
Earlier this year, Plocher attended a class about suicide grief at the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Boulder, Colo., and came home wondering what she could do to help those who have been through such difficult times.

Frisch earns all-conference honors at DMACC

DES MOINES — Former Grundy Center High School standout Sarah Frisch has earned a pair of postseason honors following a successful sophomore season at Des Moines Area Community College.
Frisch, a 2012 GCHS grad, garnered National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-A All-Tournament Team honors and was named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference all-conference first team.

Ubben, Petersen take MVC honors

Former AGWSR standout Macy Ubben, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC's) Defensive Player of the Year. Ubben earned first-team All-MVC for the second time in her career. She finished the regular season eighth in the MVC in points per set with 3.50. She led the Panthers in kills with 2.97 per set and was second on the team in digs with 3.37 per set. Ubben was also named MVC Scholar-Athlete first team this season for the second time in her career.

Wolverines dominate in opener

GILBERTVILLE — The Dike-New Hartford girls' basketball team opened its 2013-14 season last Tuesday with a runaway victory over Don Bosco.
The Wolverines, ranked No. 9 in Class 2A, jumped ahead 25-7 after one quarter before outscoring the Dons 19-0 in the second stanza to take a 44-7 halftime lead.
Eleven different Wolverines scored in the game, led by senior Ashley Dumler with 17 points and junior Briana Weber with 11. D-NH had 21 steals in the game, led by Blough with five and both Brooke Morgan and Katelyn VanWechel with three each.

Raymond Dale Huisman

 Raymond Dale Huisman, 85, of Grundy Center passed away November 26, 2013, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. A funeral service was held November 30 at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. A visitation was held November 29 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.
