Robert W. Thompson, 66, of Gladbrook died January 1, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. A funeral service was held January 6 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial was private. Visitation was held January 5 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. A Masonic Service was held at 7 p.m. conducted by the Masonic Coin Lodge No. 394 of Reinbeck. Memorials may be directed to the family. Martha A. Freese

Martha Ann Freese, 91, of Grundy Center died January 10, 2014, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Services were held January 14, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. A private family committal service at Rose Hill Cemetery was held prior to the memorial service. Martha Graves, 70, of Dike passed away January 7, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. D. Mavis Meester, 89, of Dike passed away on January 14, 2014, at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls. A funeral service was held January 18 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in Fern. Council bids farewell to Mayor Van Wert

    GRUNDY CENTER — The new shape of the Grundy Center City Council went into effect Monday, Dec. 30 and Monday, Jan. 6, with outgoing Mayor Rex Van Wert saying his goodbyes to Council members and city leaders and new Mayor Brian Buhrow being sworn into office.
    The Dec. 30 meeting saw Council approvals of liquor licenses for the west Casey’s General Store as well as Scotty’s Saloon and Johnny Ray’s, as well as acceptance of the November Treasurer’s and Investments Report.

Coldest temperatures since ‘96 cause limited problems

    GRUNDY CENTER — Monday’s extreme cold snap was the most significant to hit the area in more than 15 years, though problems caused by the temperatures were somewhat limited according to local officials.
