Board approves increased supply expenditure

    GRUNDY CENTER — The cost of teaching is on the increase in Grundy Center and throughout Iowa. Last Wednesday the Grundy Center Community School District’s Board of Directors approved a nearly $18,000 increase in expenditures for instructional supplies.
    The increase is due to Iowa Core requirements, according to Superintendent Cassi Murra. This year’s orders total $59,476 according to a request from Secondary and Elementary Principals Ann Lebo and Lisa Miller, an increase from $42,000 last year.

County receives counteroffer for Zenor, Inc. property

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors and Zenor, Inc. appear closer to a settlement than in a long time regarding the County’s purchase of the former Baptist church property at the corner of Seventh Street and H Avenue.
    Monday, following a lengthy executive session, the Supervisors briefly discussed having received a counter to an offer they made. Supervisor Barb Smith made a motion that the Supervisors request from Zenor’s counsel that an asbestos inspector be allowed to inspect the property prior to considering the offer.

Robert William Buck

Robert William Buck, 90, of Ackley, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away June 16, 2014, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service was held on June 20 at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Grundy Center. Visitation was held on June 19 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial followed the luncheon at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook. Memorials may be directed to the family. Wellsburg crowns royalty

Wellsburg Daze hits its full stride Monday with the crowning of Little Miss and Little Mister Wellsburg as well as Miss Wellsburg during a ceremony at the City Park Band Shell. Relay for Life

Hundreds of walkers and well wishers took over the Grundy Center High School track Friday night, all to raise money for a cause. For the fourth consecutive year, the Grundy County Relay for Life was held in Grundy Center, featuring music, auctions and stories of those touched by cancer. Hillary Samo and her family (top) were the banner carriers for this year’s Survivor and Caregiver Family. Prior to the ceremonial lap around the track, Samo’s story of discovering her cancer less than a year ago and her recovery since was told through her mother’s eyes.
