Heitland, Stoakes take State Track titles

DES MOINES -- A pair of local boys will be bringing State Track and Field hardware home Saturday night.

AGWSR's Austin Heitland won the Class 1A 400-meter dash Thursday while Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Eric Stoakes won the 400-meter hurdles Friday. Heitland's title was part of a big Thursday morning session for the senior, as he also qualified for Saturday's 100- and 200-meter dash finals.

Stoakes is Gladbrook-Reinbeck's first state track champion since Ryan Harms won the 1,600-meters in 1995.

Ninety years and counting, Pie Lady still going strong

GRUNDY CENTER — Have you enjoyed a piece of pie while eating lunch at Manly Drug in Grundy Center, or while sitting down for a dinner with family and friends at Holland’s Lone Tree Inn? Then chances are, you are acquainted with The Pie Lady.

Long time GC food service director set for retirement

GRUNDY CENTER — The winds of change are blowing in the Grundy Center Community School District. As the students say their goodbyes for the summer, they will be the final goodbyes to several teachers, their long-time high school principal and their superintendent.
It will also be a final goodbye to somebody every student and most faculty members know well, even if they do not know who she is. Food Service Director Barb Rose announced earlier this year that she would be retiring at the end of the school year.

ACKLEY — Forty-seven AGWSR High School seniors were honored Sunday for accomplishing what, for many, has been a life-long goal; to graduate from high school. They looked to the future and the past, celebrating their triumphs and remembering their time together.
Graduating senior Kary Doyle, speaking for the students, talked of being a family.

Murphy named Teacher of the Year

GRUNDY CENTER — It is an annual occurrence as graduating Grundy Center High School seniors fill out questionnaires about what they’ll remember most. As they reach the question about what teacher had the greatest influence on them through their high school career, one name comes up time and time again.
Mrs. Vicki Murphy ... better known to her students as “Murph” was honored Monday by the local chapter of the Mason’s, Emerald Lodge 334, as the Grundy Center Teacher of the Year.
“I was shocked, humbled ... it’s quite an honor,” Murphy said.

It's all about the martins

GRUNDY CENTER — During a quick drive around Grundy County, you are likely to see more birds than you can count. You’ll see sparrows, black birds, cardinals, robins, and possibly even a bald eagle or two if you are lucky. It is a lesser-known, though still abundant bird that has drawn the interest of a Grundy Center man.
“(Martins) have a unique chatter, song ... they’re just awesome,” Rod Onnen said.

Grundy Council acts on several BIG requests

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center City Council approved a series of Business Innovation Grants and denied one during its regular meeting Monday at City Hall.
The Council approved grants of $6.345 for Dave Loftus to do tuck pointing, brick replacement and roof repairs at the Grundy Center Laundry Mat and $1,620 for Loftus to do roof repairs at Video Place but denied Loftus’ request for the forgivable matching loan funds of $1,138 for work at 604 8th Street.
