Former Spartan, Frisch, to play at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE — Former Grundy Center High School volleyball standout Sarah Frisch has announced her intentions to continue her collegiate volleyball career.
Last week Upper Iowa University announced that Frisch, who is currently a sophomore at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), will be transferring to the university and playing for the Peacocks next season.

APGC soccer scores two more wins

 HUMBOLDT – The APGC girls’ soccer team went 2-0 on the week, earning a hard fought 2-0 victory at Humboldt on Thursday, after a dominating 10-0 win over CAL, Latimer at home on Tuesday. APGC was scheduled to host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura in Aplington on Tuesday, April 29.

At Humboldt, defense proved critical in an extremely physical, closely played game. Senior goalkeeper Kym Lind set the tone with big plays early to lead the APGC defensive effort.    

Wolverines rally to win own invitational

DIKE — Dike-New Hartford rallied in the final event of the night to win its own Wolverine Invitational last Tuesday.
The Wolverines trailed Wapsie Valley 96-93 entering the 4 x 400-meter relay, needing to finish at least two spots ahead of the Warriors to take the title. D-NH did everything it could do, winning one the event by more than 2 ½ seconds while Wapsie came in sixth.

Cougars sixth at Comet Relays

CONRAD — AGWSR athletes won a pair of events, leading the Cougars to sixth-place at the BCLUW Comet Relays Thursday in Conrad.
Junior Clay Meinders led a 1-2 Cougar finish in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 6 inches while senior Austin Heitland won the 100-meter dash.
Vinton-Shellsburg won the meet with 122 points while BCLUW (82), Aplington-Parkersburg (80), West Marshall (68) and South Hardin (55) rounded out the top five. Dike-New Hartford ran a limited team in the meet and placed 10th with 17 points.
 

Lois Mae Erpelding

Lois Mae Erpelding, 93, of Waterloo, formerly of Dike, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Rev. Dick F. Harberts, 93, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Windhaven Assisted Living of Western Home Communities of natural causes. Funeral services were April 26  at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1926 Sager Avenue, Waterloo. Private family burial was held at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary or St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

Faith Blunt Engelkes

Faith Engelkes, formerly of Grundy Center and Cedar Falls, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2014, with two daughters at her bedside  in Albuquerque, NM. There will be a Memorial Service for both Faith and Jim Engelkes at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, on May 15 at 2 pm with a reception following. Visiting with the family before the service begins at 1 pm. Phyllis Ayers, 81 of Scottsdale, AZ, formerly of Lincoln, passed away April 19, 2014, in Tonopah, AZ. Memorial services were held on Friday, April 25 at the National Cemetery Chapel, Phoenix, AZ.
