Leslie “Les” L. Muller

Leslie “Les” L. Muller, 61, of Steamboat Rock, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away December 1, 2015, at his home while under Care Initiatives Hospice. A memorial service was held December 4 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Phil Dicks officiating. Memorial visitation was held December 3 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Inurnment followed the memorial service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family, where they will donate to a charity of their choice.

Lorraine P. Siefken

Lorraine P. Siefken, 93, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Wellsburg, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 2, 2015. at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. A funeral service was held December 5 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial followed the funeral service at the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church. The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Grundy Center girls, boys sweep close NICL West contests with AGWSR

GRUNDY CENTER – An early season matchup between local NICL-West rivals provided fans with some exciting moments Friday night, as both the girls’ and boys’ games between AGWSR and Grundy Center were closely played throughout. Grundy Center pulled out both games in the final quarter, the Spartan girls prevailing 53-47 and the boys 56-46.

Spartan boys open season with win over Don Bosco

GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy Center got off to a strong start in their first time on the court this season against Don Bosco Thursday. The Spartans had a huge 28-point first quarter, and held a 23 point lead at the half. They continued to control the game in the second half, and ended with a 73-38 win over the Dons.

Comet girls split over weekend

CONRAD — A fourth quarter rally was not enough for the BCLUW girls to overcome an 18-point third quarter deficit on Friday night as the Comets fell 62-51 to South Hardin in an NICL West conference tilt in Eldora, but they rebounded with a 52-37 win over Hudson at the Wartburg Holiday Classic on Saturday.
On Friday, South Hardin enjoyed a double-digit lead from most of the first three quarters when BCLUW rallied back for an interesting fourth frame.

D-NH girls open season with back-to-back victories

DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford girls’ basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with back-to-back victories early last week before suffering its first loss on the young campaign in the North Iowa Cedar League Shootout.
D-NH outscored Don Bosco 47-17 Monday and Waterloo Columbus 44-21 Tuesday, holding both opponents under 30 percent shooting, before falling to Class 4A No. 12-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock 59-34 at Wartburg College in Waverly.

Three Wolverines take titles at Belle Plaine Invite

BELLE PLAINE – Three Dike-New Hartford wrestlers won individual championships Saturday at the Belle Plaine Invitational, lifting the Wolverines to third place in a competitive team race.
Marshalltown crowned six champions and won the tournament with 174 points while Grinnell edged D-NH by a single point, 147-146, for second place.
Wolverine champions included Kody Kugel at 132 pounds, Trent Johnson at 145 and DJ Ackerson at 195. Johnson and Ackerson pinned their way to championships, while Kugel scored two falls and a major decision.
 

Wolverines sweep duals from GRNT/GC, Sumner-Fredericksburg

DIKE – The Dike-New Hartford High School wrestling team showed off its depth Thursday, sweeping a season-opening triangular against GRNT/GC and Sumner-Fredericksburg.
The Wolverines topped GRNT/GC 72-12 and Sumner-Fredericksburg 39-25. S-F also topped GRNT/GC 64-12.
Four Dike-New Hartford wrestlers went 2-0 on the night.

Comet boys go winless during opening week

CONRAD, ELDORA- New coach Luke Higgins’s tenure at the head of the BCLUW boys’ basketball program got off to a shaky start with a pair of double-digit losses at the hands of Waterloo Christian and South Hardin to open the season last week.

Fourteen players score as D-NH boys dominate opener

DIKE — During preseason, Dike-New Hartford boys’ basketball coach Greg Moore lauded the depth his team could have this year. If last Tuesday’s opener is any indication, Moore’s thoughts could be on the mark as 14 players scored in the Wolverines’ 80-30 season-opening victory over West Marshall.
The Wolverines jumped ahead 23-5 after a quarter and never looked back, leading 45-20 at halftime and 61-25 after three quarters.
